Given the continuous growth in construction projects in India, all stakeholders, be it owners, contractors and consultants are struggling to find, train and retain talent. Securing and protecting technical expertise specific to a project is fast becoming the biggest roadblock for the timely delivery of projects.

GEM's talent acquisition - A game changer for project management

GEM Engserv is an engineering consulting services provider and one of our core values is “Value Creation Through Competence”. When the first opportunity of project staffing came across to us, there was a reluctance to respond to the request. The apprehension was that this service might dilute our reputation as an “Engineering Consultant of Choice”. After all, many consider secondment service as a euphemism for body shopping. However, the request had come from an important customer, and our other value “Customer Focus” took center stage above “Value Creation Through Competence”!

New staffing models for construction projects

A few years on, GEM’s resource deployment service (Temping / Secondment staffing) has become a significant part of the brand which otherwise is known as a Project Management Company, and it has transcended body shopping. This service is now sought by several other customers as well, and in many ways, it is turning out to be a win-win for all.

Through our interactions with customers, we realized the benefits that are driving the temping services in construction, and these are no different from the situation in other industries.

The benefits that clients seek through temping services are many and are listed below.

  • Flexibility in Workforce Management: With the increasing uncertainty prevailing in all businesses, organization need to be agile enough to scale their workforce up or down depending on business demands (e.g., peak seasons, special projects, staff absences). Temping provides an easy way to have a flexible workforce.
  • Quicker mobilization: As organizations grow, new work processes are created, and these inadvertently lead to bureaucracy. While delays in staffing may be tolerated in staff functions, projects do not have the luxury of long lead times. We know many reputed organizations that take at least 3 months to hire one resource, 6 months being the average lead time!
On the other hand, staffing agencies often have employees on the bench who can be deputed withing a few days. Even if they don’t have bench strength, any temping agency worth its name can and should be able to mobilize resources within a month if not a fortnight!
  • Lower Risk: Many employers use the temping route to test the competence of the worker before offering them permanent employment. This can significantly reduce the cost of hiring mistake.
  • Cost Savings: Many temping agencies operate with much smaller overheads as they do not need to maintain costly fixed assets. Thus, the cost to the organization taking on a temporary worker, even after adding the overheads and profit of the temping agency may be lower than the real cost of in-house human resource!
  • Access to Specialized Talent: Large organizations have many departments and functions which are not a part of their core competence. They may find it difficult to attract talent for such functions / roles. A temping agency, especially if it specializes in some specific functions such as payroll, construction quality, construction safety etc. may be in a better position to nurture workers with niche skills or industry-specific experience.

The workmen may also find some benefits of the temping services and these include:

  • Quick Employment: They may find it a faster way to get a job, especially during career transitions or between permanent roles.
  • Flexibility: Employees can choose short-term or part-time assignments if that fits their schedule or lifestyle.
  • Gain Experience: They have an opportunity to build skills, strengthen their resume, and explore different industries or roles.
  • Foot in the Door: Many temporary jobs often lead to full-time, permanent positions and as already pointed out earlier, reduced hiring errors are a plus for the employees also.
  • Networking: Temping employees have the opportunity to build connections with multiple employers, which can open doors for future roles or references.

So, do you think the temping service would have actually diluted the brand?

Well, the two values of “Customer Focus” and “Value Creation Through Competence” was combined to create a niche for this resourcing solution. There is now a technically guided screening and training process for hiring the best fit team member.

The same rigour in on-boarding employees for temping services is implemented as for requirements in the core project management business. All resources are part of the GEM family and receive the same inputs during induction, training, team building and employee engagement. Temping resources are guided and mentored throughout their tenure (even though this is not a contractual requirement). The impact is visible. Many customers admit that the teams deployed by GEM are better aligned with their vision and are also more engaged with a will to deliver beyond expectation.

Above all, it helps us fulfil one of our visions which is to create meaningful employment opportunities for the construction professionals!
