We have started the practice of candidates undergoing technical test and test of communication as a prerequisite for getting shortlisted for an interview. It is seen that many candidates perform well on technical test but are found wanting on the language and communication skills test.
Communication is not a soft skill for a Construction Engineer—it is an essential engineering skill and an important career differentiator. Technical knowledge may get someone shortlisted, but ability to communicate clearly can influence success in interviews, meetings and professional interactions.
On site, clear communication can prevent defects, ensure that concerns are understood and acted upon, and influence the behaviour of teams towards safe working practices. English may not be our mother tongue, but it is the common language of much of the engineering and construction industry. You do not need sophisticated English—only clear, confident and purposeful communication. Good communication makes good engineers more employable, effective and successful.
With excellent self-learning tools now available, I hope that construction Engineers invest their time in enhancing their communication skills as much as they do on the technical front.
